RIP DRARI

[18:38]Vanaf vanavond. Vrijdag heb ik wellicht een opening. Jij?
[19:22]Welkom terug:) Doen we vrijdagnamiddag ergens? Bvb wandelen in Rivierenhof? Waar woon je ergens?
[22:43]Waar woon jij?
[23:40]Jij praat-
[23:40]Klinkt perfect
[23:40]Stilte mag ook

[20:21]Op mijn mpc.
[20:23]2000xl
[20:23]Hahah...
[20:23]Ik verhuis binnenkort naar Nederland.
[20:23]Heeft onze ontmoeting dan nog zin?
[20:24]Ja lijkt mij tof!

[05-12-2020]

Daar woonde iemand die ik ken. Heel mooi. Nu woont ze er niet meer. Gek he?
Ja, we gingen toen varen of zoiets.
Echt?!
Hoe maak jij muziek?
Hahaha.
Ja
Nee. Euhm.
Ja.
Ludittes is gestopt. Voice Actor is gestopt. Dat heb ik onlangs beëindigd. Wat ik moeilijk vind. Maar we hebben zo veel geproduceerd.
Ja zoveel muziek.
We hebben 600 tracks geproduceerd sinds deze zomer.
Wow
RIP DRARI
That’s want he wants to be called if a name is really required. It’s just one of many aliases he has used to release music over the last year.

He calls them temporary projects, uses Soundcloud accounts for barely a month or two and then … they implode, along with the brilliant music you get access to for a limited time. My conversation with him was as fragmented as the number of Soundcloud accounts of RIP DRARI. He turned out to live in Antwerp, where we met each other.

[16:44]When will you be back in Antwerp?
[18:38]Tonight. I’ll probably have some time off on Friday. You?
[19:22]Welcome back:) Can we meet somewhere this Friday afternoon? A walk in Rivierenhof? Where do you live?
[22:43]Where do you live? I live in Borgerhout.
[22:44]Rivierenhof? I’m not a pensioner yet.
[22:44]What about starting at Turnhoutsebaan?
[23:33]Come to think of it, the ‘Hof’ has got a nice backside. It is beautiful.
[23:34]Hahaha.
[23:34]Sound plan!!
[23:35]Hahaha, okay.
[23:35]Friday then?
[23:35]What is an afternoon?
[23:38]Goh … Could be anything from 12 p.m. until curfew for me. I’m flexible and haven’t planned anything else. What do you prefer?
[23:39]Free! Wow. 1 p.m. sounds good? I will take you around some trivial scenery.
[23:40]You will do the talking, alright?
[23:40]Sounds perfect.
[23:40]Silence is possible.

[20:21]Do we meet tomorrow? A Post-it note has just reminded me.
[20:21]On my mpc.
[20:23]2000xl
[20:23]Hahah...
[20:23]I’m going to move to the Netherlands soon.
[20:23]Does our meeting still make sense then?
[20:24]Yeah, definitely.

[05-12-2020]

Someone I know used to live there. Beautiful place. Now she doesn’t live there any longer. Odd, isn’t it? That you have been in apartment blocks that you can’t enter anymore as the people you know have moved. Know what I mean?
I guess so.
I have been visiting lots of houses the last couple of months, looking for something to rent. Without a real reason you get the possibility to look inside everywhere. I have visited lots of places that I actually didn’t want to rent, but I just wanted to be able to have a look inside.
A while ago I was looking for a second-hand couch and visited a lot of living rooms. It is strange to enter the lives of people you don’t know.
When did you move to Antwerp?
I used to live in Breda.
Have you ever been to Dordrecht?
I think so. I do recall a bachelor party …
Seriously?
Yeah, we did a boat tour or something like that.
Really? On the canals of Dordrecht?
I was one of those folks …
I have had a good time in that studio, but from a creative perspective it wasn’t a very productive place. I had the sense that people were eavesdropping.
A bit paranoid, aren’t you?
I don’t think so.
Healthy paranoia?
Could be healthier, but it’s okay.
Haha, a bit of wariness.
No, hehe, but when I am making music my surroundings quickly get a hold on me and I think they might impact the process.
You look like a very emphatic person to me. Seems hard for you to isolate yourself when you are creating something new.
IThe same thing happens when I’m collaborating.
Why this warehouse? Is this an attractive area to you?
Definitely. I love places where there is no human scale. Warehouses are fascinating. Very spacious but at the same time they are not. They are like skylines of nothing (in particular).
I am really into Soundcloud. It’s so accessible. You can post music on it, delete your account and simultaneously create a new one.
Where does that idea come from, constantly deleting and creating new accounts?
I see them as projects. When I delete an account, I archive the music and then I start a new one. It keeps the whole process fresh to me, also the creative part, even though I always make the same technical mistakes …
What do you make music with?
Mostly Ableton. Sometimes machines. Lots of things. That’s a question that’s often asked to me. But the process, how I make things and the software I use, are personal things, which doesn’t mean that I am a protectionist or something like that …
Yeah. Well, it is tempting question to ask. But at the same time it does not necessarily contribute anything. Ableton. Doesn’t really disclose anything.
Yeah, it’s just an interface.
There is this plugin that simplifies the whole interface of Ableton. The grid and so on… It’s all gone. It changes the process and I like that. All those different layers and structures have a huge influence.
How do you make music?
Hahaha.
You aren’t familiar with the Dutch rap scene, are you?
I do know the 101Barz with the sample that you used.
Haha.
I had second thoughts about meeting like this, because I like running into people in a natural, spontaneous way. Because of the same choices that you have made, you are at the same concerts, same places, whatever, and rightly so.
Looks like ‘Little Netherlands’ here. Neotraditional, that’s what I like to call it. It’s frightening. Haha. But I get it. People appreciate cities with historical buildings. I understand. Taking someone’s memory away would really get that person in a panic. I understand that history is important to people. It connects them in some way, although they don’t fully understand that connection. That’s why new buildings contain lots of traditional elements. And then something like this is the result. Very alienating.
I don’t like this at all.
That’s paradoxical with what I have just said. I really believe people prefer these buildings to the other ones you see around here, because of the recognizable historical elements.
Really? No.
But do you understand what I mean when I tell you I think people start feeling uncomfortable when it’s no longer there?
Do I talk too much?
Not at all.
I’m afraid I have become a bad listener. I tend to interrupt others.
I like listening.
Okay, but it’s annoying to get interrupted and I have already done that a couple of times since we met.
That’s something I could do: use all the sentences that I couldn’t finish because of you interrupting me.
The only thing you are going to hear is your jacket rubbing against your recorder.
The recording is probably going to be rubbish. I don’t even know whether I am ever going to listen to it. But it’s a document.
That’s another thing I am going to miss about Belgium: the temporary facade. And these gaps in between buildings that still have to be filled but remain voids for a long time.
Look at those stairs. That must be the most beautiful fire escape in the world.
Do you know Panamarenko?
Yes
Have you ever seen his house?
No idea. Shall we have a look at it?
Yes. Last stop.
Check out this tunnel. Look at all that timber.
There are many things I don’t notice, but you do, and I like that. I suppose we are attracted to different things.
But you are a watcher?
Yeah, but more of a people watcher, I guess.
Which can also be emotional. The faces of people. And the contact they are searching. Difficult. So you look more at their behavior? At what they are doing? Their clothes? Interesting.
No, uhm, I don’t know. I try to empathize. People are fascinating. I have got a clue about the place I live and what Antwerp means to me, but it’s a completely different place to everyone. Weird. It sets me thinking.
Have you ever asked anyone else to listen to your ideas?
Look, that’s the difference between us. I walked in front of that car and you were emphatic towards that person. It reveals how someone makes certain choices.
Yeah.
Ludittes is finished business. Voice actor as well. I have stopped that project recently. It’s hard. But we produced a lot.
A lot of music.
We recorded 600 tracks since the summer of 2020.
Wow.
I really spend a lot of time on making music.
You just keep on going.
True. I am not like you. I’m not saying that to drive a wedge between you and me, but you release real albums that contain a healthy amount of tracks, not 28. You also release your work: it can probably be bought on Bandcamp or when I send you a message. You are not difficult and very open about these things. Seems really cool to me, but I am still different. I am not there yet.
Would you like to be ‘there’?
I think so, but not in that way.
The way you release music is very inspiring to me. It’s refreshing and different.
I see. You probably get quite an audience when you are doing something new. That’s not the case for me. When you have made new music, people are actually really listening to it.
Maybe. I suppose there is an audience somewhere.
Bizarre idea, isn’t it?
Anyhow, I also reflect on my approach, on the things I do. Maybe this conversation is part of that quest.
Aah, here we go again: another car that I gave advantage while you just walked on …
Doesn’t matter.
We are different.
I really like what you are doing.
That’s why I was late, wasn’t I?
